A long awaited 3% increase in DA, the most important component of their salary structure, will find its official declaration from the Government of India. With an increase passed, about 50 lakh Central Government employees and 65 lakh pensioners would stand to benefit.
What Is Dearness Allowance?
Dearness Allowance is multiplier to balance out the effect of inflation felt by a government employee or any other employee of public undertakings and a pensioner. Therefore, it is raised two times annually, in January and July, so that inflation prevents the erosion of purchasing power of such employees. Several factors go into its calculation, but the key most index considered is that of the Consumer Price Index-Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) as released monthly by the Labour Bureau.
Expected Raise And Impact
The DA increase that is presently under consideration would most likely be given a 3% enhancement, according to the latest CPI-IW figures and subsequent reports, which would raise the DA from 50% to 53%. Since DA is paid as a percentage of the basic pay, this increase will directly increase the salaries and pension amounts.
For instance, at a base salary of ₹30,000, the DA raise of 3% would mean another ₹900 to be paid in the monthly salary. Likewise, the incremental pension would be deposited to the pensioners’ bank accounts every month to provide something against rising price levels.
NYO Such An Official Notification
While the administrative procedures have considered the DA hike at various other levels, the official letter has not yet been sent by the Ministry of Finance. Ordinarily, after being approved by the Union Cabinet, the DA hike is considered to have come into force retrospectively either from July 1 of that year or from January 1 of that year.
Many urge that the announcement be made at the earliest due to the ongoing inflation and mounting expenses of a household. Even in the previous times, every DA revision became enforceable with arrears to backdate, thus creating an atmosphere of expectancy.
Why Is A DA Perk?
In the lives of many, DA is hardly an adjunct amount; rather, it provides sustenance, and in turbulent economic times, an increase in DA-decent, timely-assuages the sting of inflation to some degree in one’s daily life, from food to health care, from transport to education.
